Shockwave Therapy Q & A

What is shockwave therapy?

EPAT shockwave therapy is an FDA-cleared treatment that uses acoustic pressure waves to relieve foot and ankle pain. The waves stimulate circulation and boost cell regeneration, accelerating the healing process.

Shockwave therapy is safe. It’s noninvasive and has virtually no side effects such as infection or scarring. It’s fast and doesn’t require anesthesia, medication, or surgical intervention to deliver lasting results.

What conditions improve with shockwave therapy?

The team of podiatrists at Arcadia Foot and Ankle use EPAT shockwave therapy to treat painful foot and ankle conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel spurs
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Ankle sprains
  • Posterior tibial tendinitis
  • Shin splints
  • Retrocalcaneal bursitis
  • Patellar tendinitis
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease
  • Turf toe
  • Neuroma

If you live with foot or ankle pain, ask your podiatrist if EPAT shockwave therapy is right for you.

What happens during a shockwave therapy treatment?

EPAT shockwave therapy treatments are usually quick, lasting 5-10 minutes, depending on the extent of your injury.

Your podiatrist begins by applying a gel to the area of your foot or ankle being treated. They press the applicator against your foot and turn on the EPAT machine to release the sound waves. Your podiatrist moves the applicator in small circles to treat the whole area.

You don’t need any downtime to recover after shockwave therapy. You can put weight on your foot immediately and return to your regular activities within 24-48 hours.

Your podiatrist creates a personalized treatment plan to address your needs. Most patients start with three or four sessions in a week. You might begin to notice an improvement after just three sessions, but you might need several weeks of shockwave therapy to optimize your results.

What are the benefits of shockwave therapy?

EPAT shockwave therapy offers many benefits, such as a rapid recovery. Your body heals quickly since the treatment is non-invasive and doesn’t require incisions or stitches.

Additionally, you don’t need to take time off to recover. You can return to most normal activities within a day or so.

EPAT shockwave therapy also minimizes your pain. Not only is the treatment not painful, but it relieves pain from the condition being treated.

If you have chronic foot or ankle pain, call Arcadia Foot and Ankle or make an appointment online to discover if EPAT shockwave therapy is right for you.
